Abstract A glass-ceramic article comprises silica, lithia, phosphorus pentoxide, and zirconia in amounts that, when heat treated, provide a glass-ceramic including a lithium disilicate (L 2 Si 2 O 5 ) crystalline phase. The glass-ceramic may have high fracture toughness, transparency, hardness, and may be strengthen via ion-exchange.
